Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, potentially debilitating disease that affects your central nervous system, which is made up of your brain and spinal cord. Multiple sclerosis is widely believed to be an autoimmune disease, a condition in which your immune system attacks components of your body as if they're foreign.
In multiple sclerosis, the body mistakenly directs antibodies and white blood cells against proteins in the myelin sheath, a fatty substance that insulates nerve fibers in your brain and spinal cord. This results in inflammation and injury to the sheath and ultimately to the nerves that it surrounds. The result may be multiple areas of scarring (sclerosis). Eventually, this damage can slow or block the nerve signals that control muscle coordination, strength, sensation and vision.
Multiple sclerosis affects an estimated 300,000 people in the United States and probably more than 1 million people around the world — including twice as many women as men. Most people experience their first signs or symptoms between ages 20 and 40.
Multiple sclerosis is unpredictable and varies in severity. In some people, multiple sclerosis is a mild illness, but it can lead to permanent disability in others. Treatments can modify the course of the disease and relieve symptoms.

"Multiple sclerosis, once established, is likely to lead to serious disability, and in this scenario the best prognosis is partial improvement. But if management is begun early, an authentic integrative strategy will in many cases achieve near-complete relief of symptoms. Strict adherence to diet and lifestyle changes; elimination of toxic and microbial body load; aggressive use of nutrients; and exceptional commitment to minimizing stress, are all mandatory requisites for a quality coexistence with this disease."

Causes and Consequences
"Since its discovery around the mid-1830s, there has been endless speculation about the cause of MS. Now we’ve come to realize that the first reported appearance of the disease occurred only a few years after the original insertions of dental mercury as amalgam fillings in 1826. During our interview, Cardiologist Thomas Levy told me that Dr. Hal Huggins has researched this medical history and acted on it. "Dr. Huggins has consistently witnessed improvement in MS patients undergoing amalgam removal. He observes clear symptomatic and laboratory test improvements in up to 85 percent of the patients. Until he relinquished his Colorado dental license, it was common to see wheelchair-bound patients discontinue use of their support chairs and take steps on their own once again," said Dr. Levy.
Multiple sclerosis recovery has happened repeatedly for patients so afflicted because they have undergone dental amalgam removal. Clinical observation confirms that multiple sclerosis is predominantly a dental disease. It is brought on by dentists packing mercury and other amalgamated metals into the cavities of people with impaired teeth. Mercury amalgams have made people what holistic and mercury-free dentist Richard T. Hansen, D.M.D., of Fullerton, California, has described as "dental cripples." (Note: Dr. Hansen’s holistic practice procedures are discussed at length in chapter 2. See the listing of his book on holistic dentistry in appendix B.) The success rate of healing for MS patients increased with Dr. Huggins’ discovery of fluoride in all its forms as a complicating factor in the disease. Fluoride must be scrupulously avoided by MS patients. They must not drink fluoridated water, brush with fluoridated toothpaste, or take fluoride dental treatments. Ingestion of this chemical retards the patient’s clinical progress toward healing or even promotes frank clinical relapse of MS symptoms.
Dr. Huggins has MS. Since he has experienced its symptoms for many years, Dr. Huggins himself is all too keenly aware of the nuances and persistence of MS as a disease. But he keeps the symptoms largely in check by following a series of stringent lifestyle modifications, eating an excellent diet (the dental diet), and taking nutritional supplementation as part of his daily regimen. It is well known that dentists push the use of fluoride products and fluoride drinking water on the public. By doing so, they are assuredly increasing the incidence of multiple sclerosis in the Western world. (See chapter 14.)
The brain and central nervous system (CNS) are strongly affected by the electrical current present in all people whose mouths contain metal. This phenomenon is readily recognized as "oral galvanism." Such electrical currents can be measured easily with a probe and a microammeter.Amalgams, metallic crowns, and braces generally all register from 1 to 100 microamperes of current in a positive or negative polarity. The natural currents found in the brain are in the range of 7 to 9 nanoamperes, making the mouth currents anywhere from 100 times to 10,000 times more powerful. Keep in mind that the base of the brain is roughly an inch away from the upper teeth.
The consequence is that MS patients and various other neurologically affected patients demonstrate improvement immediately with removal of this metallic electrical dental material. Their muscle strength and coordination improve and various symptoms decrease, including severe migraine headaches, chronic cough, jaw pain, muscle cramping, chest pain, and low energy levels. Even psychiatric and emotional depression disappear."

Multiple Sclerosis Article by Gary Martin ND
Do you know someone with Multiple Sclerosis?
According to the MS Society, there are an estimated 16,000 Australians who presently suffer with the debilitating symptoms of MS. Diagnoses are increasing at a rate of 8% per year. According to the medical system there is no known cure. However many medically diagnosed MS patients are now walking again, riding bicycles and even climbing mountains. Such incredible results have been achieved through strict adherence to a series of protocols recommended by the Naturopathic team at Living Valley Springs.
Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic neurological disease in which patches of demyelination are scattered throughout the white matter of the Central Nervous System, extending into the grey matter. Symptoms include weakness, a lack of coordination, abnormal sensations, speech and vision disturbances, constipation due to interrupted nerve supply to the gastrointestinal tract and general lack of mobility.
Based on the understanding that the human body is made by design to win, our team places a big emphasis on investigation, to find the source of interference that disrupts the body’s normal function in relation to any disease. Lifestyle habits, diet, spinal problems, dental health, toxic exposure, emotional issues and medical history are all investigated. Once the cause is identified, a program is designed to assist the body to remove any interference and re-establish right conditions and normal function.
According to research performed at the Calgary University in Canada, demyelination occurs when mercury ions attach themselves to a site reserved for Protein-GTP on the cellular components of the myelin sheath. This causes the structure to disassemble leaving exposed, denuded, tangled nerve threads. Research performed at the Kentucky University by Professor Boyd Haley has produced identical findings. Other metals and a variety of chemicals tested did not produce the same effect. However, there may indeed be other causal factors that have not yet been associated with the onset of MS.
The Bio-Probe Newsletter (USA) - March 1993 reported on six different studies evaluating the health effects of replacing mercury-containing dental fillings with non-mercury composites. Of 113 clinically diagnosed MS patients, 86 reported significant improvement after completion of the dental revision.
Based on these findings and information presented in a “60 Minutes” (USA) program in 1992, we were inspired to develop a recovery program for people with MS. I first tested this program on a patient in the USA in 1993. It was successful. We have since worked with many MS patients who have attended 10 or 24 day programs at Living Valley Springs. The program begins with a comprehensive process of investigation, particularly with regard to dental history and past exposures to mercury. A period of detoxification is followed by a specific nutritional protocol involving proteins that mobilise mercury and fats that assist in the elimination of this fat-soluble neuro-toxin. Low serum vitamin D is usually a problem with MS. This is addressed along with individualised antioxidant therapy. Daily exercise, where possible, is also very important.
Once MS patients are educated at Living Valley Springs they are referred to a Biological Dentist for further esting and dental revision. This is done using protective procedures supported by a series of nutritional protocols, supplementation and self-administered home treatments.
The process of removing mercury amalgam fillings can increase contamination if not done properly. Biological Dentists are concerned with the entire body and blood chemistry and how these may be affected by dental issues, rather than just the teeth. It is imperative that proper preparation and research be conducted before any action is taken in regard to dental revision.
One medically diagnosed MS patient, Carmel Egan, was barely able to walk when she first came to Living Valley Springs in March 2004. She could not even do up buttons nor receive hugs from her children. Within three months Carmel was almost completely symptom free and now rides a bicycle, jogs and leads a normal healthy life. She has written a book called Conquering Multiple Sclerosis.
Here is a short excerpt: “At Living Valley Springs I was introduced to people with health issues similar to my own, and their assurances that I had come to the right place, and was in good hands strengthened my resolve to follow the treatment protocol, and do whatever was required. Gary Martin and his dedicated team members are truly remarkable. Their commitment and passion is inspirational. I credit Gary with having been instrumental in saving my life”.

We thank God for the information and the results. We are here to share all we know and to improve the lives of all those who cross our path. Carmel’s experience is one of many similar victories. Multiple Sclerosis is one of many curable diseases.
Our bodies are made by design to win. In cases of sickness first ascertain the cause. Unhealthful conditions need to be changed, wrong habits corrected. Interference should be addressed. Then nature can be assisted in her effort to expel impurities and restablish right conditions in the system.
