What is Pilates?

Pilates is a series of exercises developed in the early 20th century by physical trainer, Joseph Pilates. It is thought that Pilates was inspired by Calisthenics, Yoga and Ballet. Joseph Pilate’s father was a prize-winning gymnast. His mother a naturopath.

Our Pilates retreat is focused on improving flexibility, building core strength and developing control and endurance throughout the entire body. Pilates places emphasis on alignment, breathing, developing a strong core and improving coordination and balance. The core, consisting of the muscles of the abdomen, lower back and hips, is often called the “powerhouse” and is thought to be the key to a person’s stability.

Introducing our Pilates Teacher, Cassie O’Grady

Cassie is an experienced Pilates Instructor, holding various certifications, including pre-natal care, post-natal care and bone density therapy (exercises to prevent or treat osteoporosis), having a wide range of field experience. She has taught Pilates on Hayman Island, in Brisbane studios and on the Sunshine Coast. Cassie is currently completing a Bachelor of Sports and Exercise Science Degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

After many years in stressful administration jobs, Cassie discovered the powerful benefits of gentle exercise classes, including mindfulness, breath work and stretching. This led her into a career teaching Pilates, proper Pilates, not just the kind taught in gyms. Having suffered from long term back pain, Cassie found that Pilates was indeed the answer to her ‘core’ muscle weakness. After practicing Pilates for some years to heal herself, Cassie took on this amazing therapeutic science as a career.

We are excited to have Cassie on the team. You may attend Group Pilates classes, or opt for private sessions. Either way, Cassie will get right to the core of your body issues.

Move, relax, breath!

What to Expect At Our Pilates Retreat?

Cassie has a great eye for detail and brings this precision to her teaching, encouraging clients to really be ‘in their own body’s’ to get the most out of their exercise classes. Her passion for both Pilates shines through and overflows to everyone within the room. Each class is your own personal practice, easily adaptable to suit all ages, experience and capabilities. With the knowledge that most people only exercise/stretch 3 to 4 hours per week, Cassie imparts the knowledge to assist healthy, efficient and pain free movement for the many hours not spent exercising and stretching. Pilates is a practise for life, Cassie is continuing to learn while teaching and while completing her own practise.

The Pilates’ system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginner to advanced. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises.

Through movement, we also benefit and create efficiency in all systems of the body including vascular, respiratory, endocrine and digestive.
